Carlos

His story broke our hearts and helped start the No Pet Left Behind campaign.

Spay Day HRM recently shared the following story on their Facebook Page…

“On this Ginger Cat Appreciation Day we’re going to specifically celebrate Carlos. Tonight we had the heart breaking job of accepting Carlos for surrender from a sobbing young boy & his family. Homelessness strikes again. They had Carlos since he was a little kitten, 8 years old, neutered, indoors only and an absolute gentleman.

It has been the theme of 2023, so many cats being surrendered due to the awful housing situation. My eyes & heart have connected too many faces with homelessness; nice families with children and pets. It is a desperate situation happening quietly in our neighbourhoods. After spending years and having success addressing the overpopulation of cats in HRM I can say we have a new cat crisis; the number of abandoned & surrendered cats due to the rental & homeless situation happening now. Once again the shelters are full, and so many abandoned cats being posted on social media looking for a place to go. Spay Day House is full and we have a waiting list to come in. Even if this family eventually finds a place to live, odds are very high pets will not be allowed. We had a request tonight to accept back two cats that were adopted out over a year ago. The rented flat was sold and no new rental can be found that accepts pets. We heard a story of a lady who rented an apartment for 10 years with her cat, the apartment building was sold and the new owner declared no pets and after 10 years in the apartment the lady had to get rid of her beloved cat. It has become absolutely ridiculous.

Contact your MLA and discuss the need for a law affecting rentals & pets. If Ontario can do it, Nova Scotia can do it too. Where there is will, there is a way. It is the way we roll at the Spay Day HRM Society. Let’s get it done.”
