Dear __________ ,

As a voter in your constituency I am very concerned about the negative impact of “no pets” rental policies in Nova Scotia. Tenants are being forced to give up their pets or move out as landlords bring in new policies prohibiting pets. Some landlords are even using them to force people out so they can increase the rent for the next tenant.

There is a growing global trend to consider pets as part of the family. Nova Scotians love their pets, enjoying their companionship, going for walks, playing and even talking to them. Studies have shown that attachment to pets is good for human health and even helps build community. Children with pets have higher levels of empathy and self-esteem compared to those who do not have pets.

A recent study by Narrative Research showed that two thirds of Nova Scotians have a pet cat and 38 per cent of Nova Scotians have a dog while 11 per cent of the population have both a cat and a dog.

It is unthinkable that a Nova Scotian will face homelessness because they do not want to give up their pet. Sadly, this is happening; people are sleeping in vehicles and tents rather than part with a beloved family member.

I urge you to act now before the situation gets any worse. Animal shelters and rescue facilities are full and have waiting lists. Unfortunately, some animals are abandoned on the street. This will lead to unwanted litters of animals being born outside and a homeless animal population explosion.

I know the solution to the housing crisis is complex but a ban on ‘no pet’ policies is a simple no-cost solution to one part of the issue. Ontario has such a regulation, why can’t Nova Scotia?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read about my concerns today. I would ask that you please respond to me in a timely manner to let me know your thoughts on this important issue.

Sincerely,
