Tuxedo Stan is upset with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture over their refusal to fund the Provincial SPCA’s cruelty investigations.
Here’s a little background about the Nova Scotia SPCA.
The SPCA is expected to do all of it’s work through donations from the public. Unfortunately, donations are not keeping up with financial demands. They have asked the government for help so they can continue to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases. Now maybe Tuxedo Stan is just a cat, but he can’t seem to understand why a society that is supposed to enforce provincial laws doesn’t receive any funding from the province. In fact, the SPCA would be able to do its job very efficiently for the amount of money Deputy Minister Penfield gets paid in a year. Hmm… maybe that’s the solution.
Citizens of Nova Scotia, please take a minute to write to your MLA, the Minister of Agriculture and Premier Dexter and request that the government reconsider its refusal to provide funding to the SPCA. The companion animals of Nova Scotia need your help.

this is not acceptable. This government each and every year gives millions of tax dollars to large corporations, with no benefits to anyone but themselves. We must stand up to support all animals that need our help. What kind of society would we be if we did not?!

I am asking the provincial Gov. and the Minister of Agriculture to reconsider their refusal to help fund the prosecution of those who are cruel to animals. It is bad enough that they only get a slap on the wrist for punishment when convicted, now that won’t even happen! Remember people who are cruel to animals would be cruel to people too if they thought they could get away with it!

Animal cruelty is not a trivial matter for the animals being mistreated, or the people mistreating them. The continued suffering of any creature should be an important enough priority for a government to not ignore it.

Dear Mr. Penfound,
I understand that today you announced that the government won’t be providing any financial support the for the Nova Scotia SPCA. Why is a society that is supposed to enforce provincial laws not receiving any funding from the province? Perhaps the provincial police could be run using the same funding model? Obviously that’s absurd, but so is the first situation. I would request that the government reconsider its refusal to provide funding to the SPCA. You can tax me for my portion … oh … wait … you already do.

What utter tripe! I listened to the Minister’s words ( I cannot call her Honorable) and I am ashamed to have such callousness in our government. And she appears to have such envy for the donations that the SPCA receives from the public. How childish. Shame!

I have 3 rescue dogs, that were abandoned and left to survive on their own. If SPCA’s were not here to save them they would starve to death, die at the hands of abusers. How can a government not find the money to support the SPCA’s many programs. Strange how MLA’s and MP’s can get wonderful expense accounts, pensions, etc and then be able to stand infront of others and say it can’t be done. Maybe they shold start doing as the rest of us do…..do without some things to support those in need.

The SPCA is an amazing organization. It does so much with so little! Please consider assisting them financially.Take a look @ your own pets and think of those animals who are not as fortunate!

Since I was born in the province but don’t live there, I don’t have an MLA to contact. As a proud Nova Scotian and the daughter of a former MLA (long deceased), I’m ashamed to hear what is happening. I hope that everyone will get busy and protest this move!
I’m proud of Stan for taking on another challenge, especially when he has his own battle to fight right now.

The SPCA took in almost 1 million dollars in public donations last in 2011 alone. Why can’t some of this money be used to pay for investigations? There would still be about $500,000 left over to do other important SPCA work.

Apparently our government officials do not value animals or the service SPCA provides. All I have to say to that is SHAME on the officials that can not see their way around supporting such a wonderful support system for our four legged friends.
They need to look deep into their souls and reconsider their decision to refuse funding to the SPCA.

Come on Nova Scotians – this is shameful – imagine a grant of $3,000.00 per year….I`m sure together our recycled items add up to more than that. Return your items to those outlets who donate to the SPCA! If Pictou can do it, other cities can too! Support the SPCA!

The SPCA is all there is to protect the helpless from brutality……and to strike fear in the hearts of monsters who inflict pain and suffering and neglect on the ones who have no say in how they are used.
We need the long loving arm of the SPCA……..

I ask that you reconsider your decision not to provide funding for investigations. Failure to do so will, in my opionion, make way for more violence against the most vunerable animals and that is not right. Why is it so hard for the govenment to do the right thing?

These animal abusers have to be taken to task. It is no less a crime to abuse a helpless animal than it is to abuse a child.
It is a proven fact that people who abuse animals go on to abuse children, women, and often become serial killers.
Please, do not let this happen in our province. Let’s lead the world and become a province that leads the way to protect all who live here.

This makes me so sad, our government would rather supply criminals with computers, tvs, etc. while they serve time in jail for a crime they committed than help the innocent animals who cannot fend for themselves. The SPCA needs help and this government should rethink it’s decision. Pisses me off!!

maybe post Daryl Dexter’s mailing address and phone number. If there is a gov’t minister responsible for the SPCA (justice, whatever), post their name and address. Organize a massive letter campaign and petition around the province. that is how we got Sue Stultz, the NB minister responsible for seniors and NB Low Income housing, to back off on allow seniors in low income units have their pets. It worked. it also embarassed the NB gov’t across the country as it was in the Toronto paper and one of the spokespeople did radio interviews across the country. The bad press works people. Use the press to your advance to put pressure on the NDP gov’t!

I think that it is completely unfair for the SPCA to not be partially funded by the government if they(SPCA) have to be the ones to find the miserable people that harm animals and to shelter them ( the animals) once they are removed from their homes, then they have to get money from the government. If the SPCA does government work then they should be funded by the government. Can you imagine the police finding time to investigate animal cruelty and having to raise money from the public? Wouldn’t be done!

I was so disappointed to hear that the government refused any funding for the
protection of at risk animals. The SPCA in the cities, towns, and municipalities work so hard under not pleasant circumstances, yet this government chooses to give out hugh amounts of money to large corporations. Money can be found for anything if wanted bad enough it seems. Please reconsider and give a larger funding to the SPCA so they can continue to care for those who are treated cruelly by their owners, not wanted animals who would be suffering if not for the SPCA. With enough money the SPCA could set up a spay and neuter program to cut down on the numbers of cats just
chucked out because no one want them, and also cut down on the ferrel cat problem,to say nothing of the abuse of farm animals which has been overlooked far too long, as well as dog cruelly which is rampant.
Please give the SPCA some decent funding so they can continue to do their jobs.
