Hi Fans, I would like to throw my support behind the Nova Scotia SPCA’s Animal Cruelty Awareness Month. Here’s some information about their campaign:

October is Animal Cruelty Awareness Month

Nova Scotia (October 3, 2012) –– The Nova Scotia SPCA has earmarked October as Animal Cruelty Awareness Month to generate awareness and support for their lifesaving work in humane education, animal protection and cruelty prevention. The Nova Scotia SPCA is the only animal welfare organization in Nova Scotia with the mandate to enforce animal cruelty laws. To support the awareness campaign, the Nova Scotia SPCA has submitted a request to the Provincial Government to officially proclaim October as “Animal Cruelty Awareness Month” in Nova Scotia.

“Cruelty investigations have increased by 8% this year over last year,” said Chief Provincial Inspector, Neil Fraser. Fraser added that “animal intake is also on the rise by 16% and that the biggest trend is neglect followed by abandoned animals and abuse.” The Society has a 100% conviction rate.

The Nova Scotia SPCA receives approximately 18,000 calls annually regarding animal welfare and cruelty investigations. The Society relies on donations to support its legislated mandate and receives no core funding, save $3,000 from the Department of Agriculture annually.

Each inspector manages over 500 active files yearly. Stacked up against the next most efficient provincial SPCA polled, the Nova Scotia SPCA was found to be 63% more efficient with investigator costs. The Nova Scotia SPCA is also 93% more efficient than their counterparts in the Department of Agriculture who manage farm animal welfare for the province. Last year, the Society saved 8,005 animals through cruelty investigations and intake and adoption services.
